My eyes open and the air is still, warm and dry. White sand on a flat plane as far as the eye can see with cracks that created a pattern of equivalent mathematical division. No hint of vegetation. My lips were the first to dry and burn in the heat. My mind began to focus on the manifestation of hydration. Looking far onto the horizon with hope.

The mirages began to emerge. Water began to pour down from one cloud above like a vertical river. The sound of a violent earthy crack of matter against matter occupied the air as it hit down.

Tiny mushrooms followed the trail as it flowed from one side of the horizon to the other. And they grew exponentially until you forgot the environment where you once were.

I walked further and the base and the caps expanded into umbrellas that began to float upwards while maintaining their connection to the earth. Forming a canopy. The ground, from which they grew, turned to pink in the compilation of radial patterns altered by each spec of sand.

The patterns had an unspoken energy. One you couldn’t hear or see but if you opened yourself up to it, you could feel it. The connection. The connection to everything.

The network of life that I always thought existed but never knew. Never experienced.

The umbrellas rose far into the sky until they were merely the size of the mirroring specs of sand in the foreground of the perspective.

A dark cloud flooded the dots in the sky and from the density, one steel bird fell violently. And then another. I looked up and I saw their waves of multiplication.

I ran but went nowhere. As if the physics of this perspective intended for this to be the only point from which I could exist.

Then black. All I see is black.

Slowly a pinhole of light appeared in the distance. I walk towards it. It grows.

It becomes an opening. An opening to a beach. The beach is covered in an atrium of corolites built to be released to the skies and to the heavens. Something pulls me to walk toward the end of the atrium. At the end, I see a…

And I wake up.

I wake up on the lab floor. Surrounded by specimens
